Teacher Education Program Tracks and Certification Areas

In the teacher education program, there are two tracks for those who are seeking an Initial Teacher Certificate to begin teaching in public schools in New York State. These tracks, and the certification areas offered via each, are as follows (the provided links will bring you to a page that shows program coursework):

Initial-only

The initial-only track is typically a one-year course of study that leads to an Advanced Certificate from UB and a recommendation for an Initial Teacher Certificate issued by the New York State Education Department.

Initial/Professional

The initial/professional track is typically a two-year course of study that leads to an Ed.M. Degree from UB and a recommendation for Initial and Professional Teacher Certificates issued by the New York State Education Department.

In addition to the program tracks and certification areas included here, the Department of Learning and Instruction also provides teacher education for those seeking a master’s degree to advance their existing Initial Teacher Certificate to a Professional Teacher Certificate in the same area of certification, as well as program options in Literacy Specialist (Birth - Grade 6 and Grades 5 - 12) and the Gifted Education extension.
