Teacher Education Program Tracks and Certification Areas

In the teacher education program, there are two tracks for those who are seeking an Initial Teacher Certificate to begin teaching in public schools in New York State. These tracks, and the certification areas offered via each, are as follows*:

1. Initial-only (typically a one-year course of study that leads to an Advanced Certificate from UB and a recommendation for an Initial Teacher Certificate issued by the New York State Education Department)

  • English Language Arts, Grades 7-12
  • Languages other than English (French, Latin, Spanish), Grades 7-12
  • Mathematics, Grades 7-12
  • Music, All grades
  • Social Studies, Grades 7-12
  • Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics), Grades 7-12

2. Initial/Professional (typically a two-year course of study that leads to a Ed.M. Degree from UB and a recommendation for Initial and Professional Teacher Certificates issued by the New York State Education Department)

  • Childhood, Grades 1 - 6 (with or without Bilingual extension)
  • Early Childhood, Birth - Grade 2 (with or without Bilingual extension)
  • Early Childhood and Childhood, Birth - Grade 6
  • English Language Arts, Grades 7 - 12 and Grades 5 - 6 extension
  • English to Speakers of other Languages, All Grades
  • Languages other than English (French, Latin, Spanish), Grades 7 - 12 and Grades 1 - 6 extension
  • Mathematics, Grades 7 - 12 and Grades 5 - 6 extension
  • Music, All Grades
  • Social Studies, Grades 7 - 12 and Grades 5 - 6 extension
  • Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics), Grades 7 - 12 and Grades 5 - 6 extension

*In addition to the program tracks and certification areas included here, LAI also provides teacher education for those seeking a master’s degree to advance their existing Initial Teacher Certificate to a Professional Teacher Certificate in the same area of certification, as well as program options in Literacy Specialist (Birth - Grade 6 and Grades 5 - 12) and the Gifted Education extension.
