The application to be considered for admission to the teacher education program is available online through the GSE website.
This application contains multiple written components for you to complete as a means to introduce yourself to the admissions committee. You will also submit supporting documents (e.g., transcripts) and there will be an interview as part of the process (if you are not currently within the Western New York area, we can schedule this interview via Skype).
For Mathematics and the Sciences, there is an internally administered content-based exam. And, for Languages other than English (specifically, French and Spanish) there is a second interview in the language of the area of certification. Additionally, some program areas require letters of recommendation.
A variety of factors impact admissions decisions.
- We prefer applicants who have made an informed choice to pursue preparation for the teaching profession. To this end, we value previous experiences working with students in schools, school-related programs, and/or community-based organizations.
- Additionally, we value experiences working within fields related to the content area of the intended certificate title.
- It is important that applicants demonstrate a strong background in academic studies, such as through an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 (we may consider applicants who have a GPA below 3.0 if other admissions factors demonstrate the capacity to build the skills and knowledge to become an effective educator), as well as through adept oral and written communication skills. Beginning fall 2015, the GRE is required for consideration of admission.
- Equally important are a strong commitment to and capacity for graduate studies that require a high level of focus guided by a sense of professional purpose.
