Application Requirements

Applications are considered for fall and spring admission, with a deadline of February 1 for fall and November 1 for spring admission. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution is required.Applications are online. All sections of the application must be completed before submission electronically. The application cannot be revised after it has been submitted.

To be reviewed for admission to the program, you must submit the following:

  • Completed online application
  • Unofficial transcripts from all colleges attended. Applicants who are currently at UB or have studied at or graduated from UB do not need to request an official UB transcript. GSE's Office of Admissions can download and print the transcript.
  • Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from faculty who can address your academic performance. On the application you will be asked to provide contact information about each individual providing you a recommendation. Please note that your recommenders will receive the electronic request to provide a recommendation letter only after you "formally submit" the application.
  • A $50 non-refundable application fee, submitted electronically through UB's ePayment system

International Applicants

In addition to the above items, international applicants must also submit:

  • Official original proof of degree.
  • A copy of your passport biographical page.
  • All international applicants (unless exempted) must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. International students may demonstrate proficiency by submitting official test scores for either the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic). Regardless of the type of test, scores must be dated within two years of the time the application is reviewed by International Admissions at the University at Buffalo.
    • The required minimum TOEFL score is 250 for a computer-based test, 600 for a paper-based test and 96 (Reading: 22, Listening: 22, Speaking: 24, Writing:24) for the Internet-based test. Information about the TOEFL can be found at http://www.ets.org.
    • The required minimum IELTS score is 7.0 overall with no individual sub-score below 6.5. Information about IELTS can be found at http://www.ielts.org.
    • The required minimum PTE score is 55 overall with no individual sub-score below 50. Information about PTE Academic can be found at http://pearsonpte.com/PTEAcademic.
    • Please note – The minimum PTE score required for acceptance to any program in Learning & Instruction is subject to faculty review.
  • All financial forms and supporting documentation must be uploaded to your application with required signatures, and must be dated within one year of the time you intend to enroll at UB. No action will be taken on dossiers of applicants who indicate no financial support. International graduate applicants must document their ability to pay for all costs incurred while studying in the U.S. Please use the standard graduate financial form at this link: http://grad.buffalo.edu/apply/funding/cost/international.html
  • An official bank statement translated into U.S. dollars

All financial forms and supporting documentation must uploaded to your application with required signatures, and must be dated within one year of the time the applicant intends to enroll at UB. No action will be taken on dossiers of applicants who indicate no financial support.
