Music Education

At UB we prepare leaders in music education who thrive in a challenging and rapidly changing educational environment. Our graduates design curriculum and assessment to meet contemporary demands including the Common Core and data-driven instruction; integrate digital technologies to enhance music learning; and value music at the core of the curriculum for every student, based on student’s individual capacity to learn music. We empower musicians with in-depth study of the psychology of learning as an overarching framework for active music making.

Our Programs

Music Education - Ed.M.

The Ed.M. in Music Education offers students an opportunity for individual attention in small classes at a major research university.Graduates from our programs influence the field as teachers in school music programs, guest conductors and composers, leaders in international & regional music organizations, professors, and more. The Ed.M. in Music Education can be completed fully online, on-campus or a combination of both, providing the flexibility you need to get your degree.

Music Education - Certificate of Advanced Study Initial Certification Preparation

For students who hold a baccalaureate or master's degree in music performance, music history or music theory, we offer a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) that prepares you for New York State Initial Certification Music PreK-12. Students interested in initial certification should apply to the CAS program in music education (36 credit hours sequenced over two years of part-time study). Please note: due to observation requirements and field placements, you must complete coursework on-campus to earn this degree.

Students who hold a BA or BM in Music may find this program suitable to their career goals. Additional music study and audition may be required. This CAS may be combined with the EdM in Music Education (63 credit hours sequenced over two years of full-time study; including summer).
