Mathematics Education
Degrees Offered: Certificate of Advanced Study; Ed.M.; Ph.D.
Certification Options: Initial Certification; Initial Certification/Professional Certification (combined); Professional Certification
Programs in mathematics education offer opportunities to study how students learn mathematics through instruction focused on problem solving, understanding, reasoning, and mathematical communication. Both master and doctoral programs emphasize the use of technology in mathematics teaching and learning, the assessment of students' understanding and performance, and psychological and social aspects of mathematics learning and teaching.

in Mathematics Education
PRIMARY CONTACTS: Dr. Ming Ming Chiu or Dr. Julie Sarama
Certificate of Advanced Study (Initial Certification)
For those who do not hold a valid NYS Initial Teacher Certificate in Mathematics (grades 7-12) and are seeking certification in this area of teaching.
Ed.M. (Initial/Professional Certification)
For those who do not hold a valid NYS Initial Teacher Certificate in Mathematics (grades 7-12) and are seeking the Master of Education as well as a recommendation for the Initial Teacher Certificate in Mathematics (grades 7-12, and grades 5-6 extension). Completion of this master's degree also leads to a recommendation for the Professional Teacher Certificate in Mathematics (grades 7-12, and grades 5-6 extension); however, for the Professional Teacher Certificate to be issued, a certificate applicant must already hold a valid Initial Teacher Certificate and meet all requirements of the New York State Education Department, including three years of teaching experience, which includes a mentored experience during the first or second year of teaching.
Ed.M. (Professional Certification)
For those who hold a valid NYS Initial Teacher Certificate in Mathematics (grades 7-12) and are seeking the Master of Education as well as a recommendation for the Professional Teacher Certificate in Mathematics (grades 7-12, and grades of 5-6 extension).

Doctoral Program in Mathematics Education
PRIMARY CONTACT: Dr. Ming Ming Chiu
Unique in the mathematics education field, doctoral programs at UB for the teaching of secondary school or college mathematics offer an alternative to a behavioristic, managerial conception of education and to a narrowly empirical definition of research. Research activities include, but are not limited to, philosophical and psychological aspects of problem solving; mathematics and computer science curriculum; mathematics content and pedagogy for gifted students; and mathematics curriculum that sheds light on personal, humanistic, and idiosyncratic variables. Some of this research involves collaboration with educators, mathematicians, philosophers, and psychologists within and outside the University.
More general information about the doctoral program in the Department of Learning and Instruction.
Other Related Programs
Students in programs in early childhood or childhood education may choose an emphasis area in mathematics. This is done through the Early Childhood/Childhood Education Ed.M. (Professional Certification) or Childhood Education Ed.M. (Professional Certification) programs. These programs do not lead to NYS Teacher Certification in Mathematics Education.
Childhood Education
Early Childhood/Childhood Education
Affiliated with the mathematics education program is UB's Gifted Math Program which brings talented students in grades 7-12 from local schools to UB for a full six-year school-college mathematics program.

Building Blocks
Research-based curricula that include software and print materials for early childhood mathematics.
Children's Measurement
Children's Measurement is a four-year, NSF-funded longitudinal study that is producing research-based learning trajectories in scientific and mathematical measurement across a seven-year span.
GeoCons - Geometric Constructions
GeoCons are a collection of resources, including short video clips and dynamic geometry files, related to traditional compass and straightedge geometry constructions.
Gifted Math Program
The Gifted Math Program annually enrolls over 250 students of outstanding mathematics ability from 7th to 12th seventh through twelfth grades in Western New York. GMP’s objective is to deliver a curriculum that challenges exceptional mathematics students.
