Application Requirements for the Literacy Specialist Program

The preferred application deadline is February 1 for fall admission and October 1 for spring admission, after these dates admission is rolling. All supporting documents must be uploaded and attached to your online application. This includes unofficial copies of your transcripts and any other documents required for review.

  1. Applicants must have applied for, or received initial New York State teacher certification.
  2. Complete online application.
  3. Two letters of recommendation (credential packets and/or photocopies are unacceptable). On the application you will be asked to provide contact information about each individual providing you a recommendation. Please note that your recommenders will receive the electronic request to provide a recommendation letter only after you "formally submit" the application. :
    1. One letter that addresses your academic abilities and experiences.
    2. One letter that addresses your teaching and/or professional experiences.
  4. GRE or Miller's Analogies Test (MAT): New York State requires a standardized entrance exam for all certification programs. The Master's level literacy program will accept either the GRE or MAT, nationally normed assessments for this requirement.
  5. A clearly written and thoughtful statement of your career goals. (Career goals statement is read thoroughly by at least two faculty, so take care in preparing it. Not only should this goal statement be well written and clearly iterate your personal commitment to education and struggling readers, but it should address significant educational or social issues related to literacy, writing, language, culture, child development, classroom teaching, and struggling readers.
  6. Unofficial transcripts from each institution that you have attended. Applicants who are currently at UB or have studied at or graduated from UB do not need to request an official UB transcript. GSE's Office of Admissions can download and print the transcript.
  7. A $50 non-refundable application fee, submitted electronically through UB's ePayment system.

Former/Maiden Name: Please be sure to provide us with your former/maiden name if you have one. When requesting transcripts, please ask the sending institution to indicate your current name and former/maiden name.

Admissions Decision
The admissions decision will be communicated to you as soon as review is complete. Typically, this takes between 6-8 weeks. The decision is based on a number of factors and is the result of a thorough and deliberate process. All decisions are final and cannot be appealed.

In order to be compliant with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), we are prohibited from discussing the admissions decision with anyone other than you, the applicant.
