Application Requirements for the LIFTS Program

Eligibility

  1. Candidates are required to hold a baccalaureate and Masters degree from an accredited institution of higher education, or from an institution authorized by the Board of Regents to confer degrees.
  2. Candidates are required to possess a permanent or professional certificate in the classroom teaching service or pupil personnel service. By exception, and subject to clarification in the Commissioner’s Regulations, candidates will be considered for admission to the program if they can demonstrate the potential for instructional leadership based upon prior experiences assessed against criteria established by ELP.
  3. In addition, candidates will be required to demonstrate their potential to become educational leaders possessing New York State’s nine essential characteristics of effective leaders as a result of their prior experiences, including experiences as a teacher, administrator, or pupil personnel service provider, by means of transcripts, writing sample, recommendation letter and an interview
  4. Please note that applicants must have at least three years of teaching in order to apply.

Application Process

All supporting documents must be uploaded and attached to your online application. This includes unofficial copies of your transcripts and any other documents required for review.To be reviewed for admission to the program, applicants must submit the following by April 1st (fall admission only):

  • Completed online application
  • A Baccalaureate and Master's degree from an accredited institution
  • A writing sample at least 3 pages in length (approximately 750 words). The content should be professional or academic in nature (i.e. master's thesis, grants, etc.)
  • Three letters of recommendation (one academic and two professional). On the application you will be asked to provide contact information about each individual providing you a recommendation. Please note that your recommenders will receive the electronic request to provide a recommendation letter only after you "formally submit" the application.
  • The GRE or MAT is typically required. However, applicants with a Master’s degree and a cumulative undergraduate and graduate GPA of 3.25 or higher should contact the Admissions office to discuss the possibility of a waiver of the test score.
  • Unofficial transcripts from all colleges attended. Applicants who are currently at UB or have studied at or graduated from UB do not need to request an official UB transcript. GSE's Office of Admissions can download and print the transcript.
  • A $50 non-refundable application fee, submitted electronically through UB's ePayment system

Selected applicants will be invited to an interview with two LIFTS faculty members.
