Childhood with Bilingual Extension (1-6)
Degrees Offered: Ed.M.
Certification Options: Initial Certification/Professional Certification (combined); Professional Certification
Programs in early childhood and childhood education deal with children from preschool up to the middle school years. Students may choose to emphasize early childhood (birth-grade 2), childhood teaching (grades 1-6), or both, or a specific childhood curriculum field, such as literacy or mathematics. The programs in early childhood or childhood education are also available with a bilingual extension/specialization.
The program in elementary education is designed specifically for graduate students without an undergraduate degree in education who wish to teach at the early childhood or childhood levels. This program enables those who have majored in approved humanities, social sciences, or sciences to pursue a master's degree and to satisfy birth-grade 6 certification requirements.
Study in early childhood education is associated with the Fisher-Price Endowed Early Childhood Research Center, which is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The center has superb facilities for ninety preschoolers and affords students the opportunity to integrate course work with observation and participation in classroom practice and research. Graduate School of Education laboratories, centers, and projects provide a rich variety of learning opportunities for these programs.
Early childhood and childhood education Ed.M. programs are available for those who wish to pursue a bilingual specialization/extension. The programs are suitable for those students who wish to obtain New York State certification to teach bilingual students birth-grade 6, those who already have initial teacher certification before entering the program, and those who aspire to complete both a master's degree in bilingual education and childhood education or early childhood certification requirements. Pending federal funding, special training grants are available for eligible students studying bilingual education. Students interested in doctoral programs specializing in bilingual education should apply directly to foreign and second language education, elementary education, or early childhood education and indicate an interest in bilingual education.
