Application Requirements

Application

Admission decisions regarding the Ph.D. program are made twice a year, for fall or spring semesters. Students must hold a master's degree in a related field. Since the number of places available in the doctoral program is small, admission is competitive. Program faculty make a collective decision based on the applicant's previous academic performance, GRE scores, work history, and achievement, clinical interview impressions, references, and the perceived ability of the program to meet the individual's expectations.
NOTE: Transfer among the programs of the Department is not encouraged. Students should not expect to enter one and later transfer to another.

Application Procedure

The application deadline is rolling.

The application for the program can be found online. All sections of the application must be completed before submission electronically. The application cannot be revised after it has been submitted. All supporting documents must be uploaded and attached to your online application. This includes unofficial copies of your transcripts and any other documents required for review. In addition to the online application, applicants must submit the following also by the application deadline (fall semester deadline is August 1 and spring semester is December 1).

  1. A $50 non-refundable application fee, submitted electronically through UB's ePayment system
  2. Graduate Record Exam scores.
  3. Three letters of reference. At least two of these must be from individuals familiar with the applicant's scholarship. On the application you will be asked to provide contact information about each individual providing you a recommendation. Please note that your recommenders will receive the electronic request to provide a recommendation letter only after you "formally submit" the application.
  4. Unofficial copies of transcripts from all post secondary institutions attended. Applicants who are currently at UB or have studied at or graduated from UB do not need to request an official UB transcript. GSE's Office of Admissions can download and print the transcript.
  5. Applicants must make themselves available for interviews with faculty on campus. In most cases, there will be one current doctoral student interviewing as well.

Former/Maiden Name: Note to all applicants, please be sure to provide us with your former/maiden name if you have one. When requesting transcripts, please ask the sending institution to indicate your current name and former/maiden name.
