The CD Strategy
A revising strategy for enhancing clarity and adding details at the paragraph level.

Developed by Tom Adams

Step 1: Introduction of the CD Strategy

The CD strategy is a writing strategy Tom Adams uses to help students gain control of their own writing. It calls for the students to ask themselves two questions following each paragraph: "Is it Clear?" and "Is it Detailed?" The objective is for students to monitor their own writing and to self-correct. The video clips demonstrate the use of this strategy from the following essay: "There were several causes to World War I. In a five paragraph essay, explain the significance of three of the causes."

Step 2: Modeling the CD Strategy

The CD strategy focuses students on revising their writing by repeatedly asking two related questions: Is the writing clear? Is the writing detailed?

Step 3: Scaffolding the CD Strategy

Helping individual students master the CD revision strategy focuses again on getting them to ask the two related questions: Is the writing clear? Is the writing detailed?
