“Everything but the Kitchen Sink”: A Special Librarian Panel Discussion

On May 27th, the UB SLA Student Group organized a panel discussion with five special librarians from the Buffalo area. The event was entitled “Everything but the Kitchen Sink” because special librarians often take on a number of responsibilities within their respective organizations. With approximately 30 students present, this event was a huge success!

Our panelists for this event include Karen Reczek (Senior Manager of the Information Resources Center at Bureau Veritas), Gayle Ablove (a Technical Services Librarian at Roswell Park Cancer Institute), Cynthia Van Ness (Director of the Library for the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society), Tim Binga (Director for the Center of Inquiry), and Joan Taulbee (Manager of Library Services at the Hodgson Russ law firm). All members of our panel are working in Buffalo area libraries and are graduates of the Library and Information Studies program at UB.

The Discussion was led by UB SLA president, Ellie Jones. Some of the topics that were addressed by the panel include information about their respective collections, library services, primary and secondary users/patrons, job responsibilities, areas of expertise, what they do in a typical work day, and challenges that are unique to special libraries. The discussion was very informative and our panel of experts were so diverse in terms of their places of employment and their skills, it made for a very interesting and dynamic discussion.

The SLA officers would like to thank all of the students who attended this event! We’re so thrilled that people enjoyed the discussion and we hope to organize a similar event in the future!
