Visitors to the following web pages will see examples of school outreach by UB and collaborations in the Buffalo region.   At this site you will find example lessons and samples of students’ work from local elementary, middle and high schools as they use Macbooks, iPads and science tools like probeware and digital microscopes in science class.   The purpose of providing such examples is to forward the conversation regarding what it looks like for students to co-construct knowledge in a science classroom.  With emerging definitions of digital literacy it becomes essential to begin to answer questions like:

  1. 1.Which tools promote deeper content understanding?

  2. 2.What essential conditions are required to use tools appropriately?

  3. 3.Who does technology benefit?

  4. 4.What best practices are associated with emerging technologies?

  5. 5.What technological / pedagogical content knowledge is required of teachers to promote constructivist learning environments?

To make sense of the some of examples visitors will see at this site we recommend a variety of authors who speak to the latest research regarding learning with technology.  Science education and technology education research demonstrates that students are constantly in the process of negotiating their own meaning from what they hear and see in the classroom.  Because we know that students are active in the process of constructing their own meaning and there are a variety of learners represented in any one classroom, the definition of being an “effective teacher” has changed in recent years.  Teachers are called upon by current standards to present science in ways that address students strengths and make personal and social connections to the content.  Each of the teachers participating in this outreach project have received months of professional development surrounding the ways children learn, which teaching strategies are most appropriate for constructivist learning environments, and specific technological applications which assist in establishing new classroom dynamics for learning which maximize student engagement and outcomes.

In the following pages viewers will see examples of student products from many kinds of science classrooms ranging from 7th Grade Physical Science to AP Chemistry.  The tools of choice for these activities include PASCO probeware, MacBook computers, iPhones, iPads, Garage Band, iMovie, iPhoto, Explore Learning Gizmos, Inspiration, Froguts, iChat, Starry Night, and the ProScope by Bodelin.  We invite visitors to sign into our visitors book as they navigate student products and even some teacher’s success stories like this one.
