LAI 585 Self-Regulated/Autonomous Learning in Second Language Contexts (for Bilingual students) SUMMER 2001 May 21-June 29 (First Summer Session)
This is a course on developing your proficiency in a second language, English or Spanish--whichever language you wish to improve and doing so in a self-directed mode. In this seminar we will discuss literature on self-directed/autonomous learning of a second language written by theoreticians and practitioners who are working in England, France, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, the United States and other countries. We will read the on-going discussion of this topic by scholars and teachers around the world on the AUTO-LIST SERVE established for that purpose. This course is appropriate for anyone interested in developing their proficiency in a second language and learning how teachers in many countries design self-directed learning experiences for their students in classroom settings. The course will count as a course in the programs of Master’s or Doctoral students in Second Language Education and is open to non-matriculated students (Doctoral students will simply extend the amount of reading they do for the course to get a broader sense of the field.) Bilingual students will be paired according to language they have chosen to focus upon and choice; e.g. one student who has selected English will be paired with a student who has selected Spanish. The instructor would like students to tell her via e-mail both the level and language she/he has selected. The course will be taught in three sites: the Classroom 593 Baldy; Lockwood Library; and the Computer Laboratory 200c Baldy.
