CEP 527 Analysis of Large-Scale Databases

The objective of this course is to enable students to develop understanding and applications of large-scale educational databases for scientific research and evaluation. The course introduces students to secondary analyses of major large-scale educational databases such as ECLS, ELS/HSLS, and PISA. This course involves both lecture and lab. The lecture part is designed to teach basic concepts and procedures required for an analysis of educational databases including research design, sampling, and measurement issues. The lab part will give students hands-on experiences with analysis of databases using the NCES Education Data Analysis (EDAT) Tool and statistical analysis programs (IEA IDB Analyzer, AM). This course is appropriate for graduate students who are interested in secondary analysis as a way to investigate education policy and research issues.
