Guillaume Boutard's research interests include digital curation and preservation, documentation methodologies for creative processes, in relation to arts and technology, but also computer-supported collaborative work and learning. He has conveyed several interdisciplinary study on the creative processes in contemporary music with live electronics or mixed-music as well as electroacoutic and acousmatic music, using research instruments coming from activity theory, cognitive linguistics, work psychology etc. His research was funded by the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Quebec's Fonds de Recherche Société et Culture, as well as the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology. He has published in different high profile journals representing various disciplinary fields, including the Journal of Documentation, Archival Science, the Computer Music Journal and Musicae Scientae.
